The challenge of demographic ageing
The number of people aged 65 or over in the world is set to more than double, from 761 million in 2021 to 1.6 billion in 2050, warns a new UN report published on 12 January 2023.
All countries face major challenges in preparing their health and social systems to make the most of this demographic shift.
Understanding ageing
From a biological point of view, ageing is the product of the accumulation of a vast array of molecular and cellular damage over time. This leads to a progressive deterioration in physical and mental abilities, an increased risk of disease and, ultimately, death. These changes are neither linear nor regular, and are not closely associated with the number of years. The diversity observed at advanced age is not the result of chance. In addition to biological changes, ageing is also associated with other life transitions such as retirement, relocation to more suitable accommodation and the death of friends or partners.
Health problems generally associated with ageing
Hearing loss, cataracts and refractive errors, low back and neck pain, osteoarthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, depression and dementia are common health problems among the elderly. As people age, they are more likely to suffer from several health problems at the same time.
Old age is also characterised by the onset of a number of complex health problems commonly known as geriatric syndromes. These include frailty, urinary incontinence, falls, confusion and bedsores, and are often the result of several underlying factors.
